The Grand Chessboard Wikia[]

For centuries, now, the world has seen a relative peace dominated by great empires. At every corner of the globe, a host of decaying dynasties have ruled over ancient civilizations and a large network of tributary states.

In the north, Mazkorvia and Ishwar. In the west, Krausenia. In the east, Agivaea and Lüttenberg. In the south, Istros and Kormoranoj.

Trade has made this world a global one, as raw materials from around the world fed a growing industrial sector that has in the last hundred years fueled a boom in both agricultural yield and economic productivity. Urban centers grew everywhere, fed by acres upon acres of fertile farmland. The world prospered.

Indeed, the greatest conflicts were always internal, as royalty everywhere sought to restrict distribution of the fruits of the Golden Age. Vassal states rarely resisted their overlords, as regional kings benefited greatly under the patronage of the great powers. But their cities and their armies would soon be replete with the newest machinery and the deadliest weapons the world had to offer.

The proliferation of high technology has, however, taken the monopoly of power away from the empires. The railroads and airships had made the world a much smaller place, and the demands of industry are forcing the dying empires to turn on one another.

The pivot of history is changing.
